Priyam Malik_HRLP039_Self Leadership_Oct2012

The third session of Self Leadership enlightened me on Power of the Mind. The Right side of the brain as we call it is the creative part of the brain. It is rich and fertile when we are young. But as we all know and realise, with age and experience, the child like attitude fades. The whole journey has an influence on our ability to think creatively.

Then what we learned was a really interesting and important concept of “dealing with complex problems”. First, we define the frame around the critical question we are trying to address. Then, we gather meaningful and reliable information. After this, we define several criteria’s and doable options. Consequently we should define the risks and the returns associated. Then, what are the trade- offs before we actually prepare for implementation.

There were some new concepts taught through interesting examples about Ideational fluency, Originality of Thinking, and Association fluency. We did an activity in which we formed varied groups of different sizes and took up the shape of different life forms. This task was uplifting and made me confident of how we can come out of our self-made cocoons and achieve great heights.

What made me think was why does this thing of reducing levels of creativity actually happen. And then we came across 5 fears that we have developed over the years, fear of failure, criticism, ambiguity, lack of resources and loss of self image. If we consciously make efforts, we will overcome these fears time and again and solve the problems we have.

Sir made us share our high and low points with our close friend in class. It made me sit back and think back about all the things that matter to me and do not so much matter.

Once again, the session was a powerful one and one of the rare sessions that I think I'll sit in and think about my mission in life!
