Nikhil_Arora_Self_Leadership_25Oct_2012

Yet another inspiring lessons by Sir Anil Sachdev as I took one more towards becoming an inspired leader and making difference to the society. It focussed on a variety of elements that leadership of brain encompasses. I learnt about how we loose our creativity as we grow up and we start thinking more logically rather than creatively. As we grow old we start thinking about what will others think of ur actions and become more circumspect in whatever we do. I learnt that left side of the human being is responsible for grasping complexity while the right side of the human brain determines the creative ability.Every laeder has the potential to be the most creative leader and if one wishes and has the zeal then no one can stop him from being creative.
The class also had its moments of great fun when we had to form groups of three, four and sometimes even seven and make different shapes raning from waterfall to tree etc. It was mainly to bring out the creative side of each of us, and thats when I realised that as we grow older we start to get hesitant of doing such activities which require more of rifht side than the left side of the brain.
I also learned about the five F's that prevents an individual from being creative, namely Fear of Failure, Criticism, Ambiguity, Lack of time and resources and finally fear of loss of image.
There was also an exercise which was to introspect about the high points and low points in life for the purpose to bring out the moments that have had a great impact on our lives and discover oneself in that process. I realised that my moments when I was at the top were those when I was appeciated for someting and I did well in studies or sports etc. however the low points were when my parents sufferred from illness and I was too young to take responsibility of their health.
Finally we all were asked to come up with a mission statement about a cause that we care about or about the expectations that we feel our family members or our scoiety have from us so that we can live upto their expectations and make a difference in their lives.

I would just like to end with a small quote by :-W.E.B. Du Bois
“Now is the accepted time, not tomorrow, not some more convenient season. It is today that our best work can be done and not some future day or future year. It is today that we fit ourselves for the greater usefulness of tomorrow. Today is the seed time, now are the hours of work, and tomorrow comes the harvest and the playtime.”

Today I watched another inspiring episode of Upanishads where I learnt how important it is to realize the “ULTIMATE TRUTH” of life and awareness of truthful living and what are the pre-requisites of getting good learning. The first part of the serial forced me to ponder upon the fact as to why it is important to study. Is studying in our life confined only to earn money and have a lavish living for ourselves or is there is bigger picture that we really need to see. The answer to the question is that we need to study and learn so that we can serve the society by removing all the barriers of caste, creed and religion as that will help in expanding our individual consciousness and match is with the Universal consciousness.
The serial showed us that if we are ready to speak the truth then we will be close to achieving the ultimate goal of our life. The serial also helped in realizing that the preaching’s of religion makes a person on dependant on the idols, beliefs and blind faith which hinders our growth as a human being.
If we consider today’s scenario I believe we find a lot of students or keen learners who are not able to get education owing to the fact that they do not belong to the high class society. The serial show cased the fact the only requirement to education and learning should be the keenness to learn rather than the background of the student. We must leave our dogmatic approach and rigidity of traditions and realize the common goal which is “Let all mankind be happy”.

Nikhil Arora_MLP010_Self Leadership_May 2012

Today we had a class on Self-Leadership and I would like to share my experience as to how I felt and what I learnt. Self –Leadership is a self-explanatory term, but it has a very deep meaning. In theoretical terms we can define Self-Leadership as an enabling process whereby a person learns to know himself/herself better and through this better understanding is able to steer his/her life better.
The main focus of Self-Leadership is answer one particular question “Who AM I”? When the class initially began the topic seemed somewhat abstract but gradually I started realizing the true essence of knowing oneself and how one can make a useful contribution just by knowing his/her traits and behaviour. Professor Anil Sachdev cited many examples to explain how consciousness leads our body, mind, feelings and values. He also explained us that the real I is neither the body nor mind, it’s the soul.
After participating in such a fascinating discussion I realized that we must try to confront the darker parts of ourselves and work to banish them with illumination and forgiveness. Moreover he made us believe that each one of us has abundance of positive energy and we must channelize it in the right direction to bring about happiness in not only our own life but act in a manner that people in our surroundings become happy by our deeds. After attending the session I really feel enlightened and believe that the first step towards attaining Self-Leadership is to honour oneself and one must always hold himself/herself responsible for all his/her deeds.
