Maruti Manesar Case

Maruti Suzuki,Manesar, Case Analysis

India’s largest passenger car company Maruti Suzuki India Ltd (MSIL) has recently been facing turmoil of emotions. Being the largest and one of the most trusted automobile manufacturing companies in India, nobody ever thought that it would face a situation of such crisis, distrust, and violence.
As described the live situation by Yogita, when she interacted with the associates in Maruti’sManesar plant, it was very clear that the workers were full of distrust, anger, and dissatisfaction with the management.
This violence has given rise to many questions, like:
Ø  What was the root cause?
Ø  Why is there a need for union?
According to my understanding after discussion about this case with Anil sir and Yogita ma’am, I believe that no small issue can give rise to such a big act of violence. As describes by Yogita ma’am, the workers were highly dissatisfied and upset with the management not fulfilling their demands and apart from this, the basic facilities, as washrooms, water coolers etc. were also not available to the workers. In the Manesar plant was mainly headed and run by Japanese counterparts of the company and this lead to a huge gap in communication between the management and workers.
Few points that I feel were main stimulants for this situation to happen, were:
Ø  communication gap between Indian management and workers, and also among Japanese management and Indian management
Ø  Lack of distrust among the workers for the management due to lingering of their demands
Ø  Average age of the workforce is 24 yrs, they are young and too ambitious, aggressive and not that mature

The Japanese management being more focussed on productivity and result were pressurising the Indian management to increase productivity and give results. This led the workers to work overtime. They were enthusiastic to work but not comfortable in working overtime. They told their demands to Indian management but Indian management failed to communicate the working style to Japanese. This lead to a non-clear communication due to cultural gap as Japanese did not know about how Indians work so they kept on pressurizing to increase the production.
All the major manufacturing contracts were loaded on Manesarplant, which increased the pressure.
As the management failed to communicate the problems to Japanese, the problem was untouched for a long time. This led to distrust among the workers.
The basic facilities like water coolers were kept far away from the working area and the workers were given only seven and a half minute break to use washrooms and drink water, so they had to literally run across the huge halls to get a bottle of water. Indian management failed to communicate this to Japanese. This increased the dissatisfactionamong the workers who were suffering for the necessities.
The workforce was young, too aggressive, and ambitious. Most of them had this as their first job so they were lacking maturity. They compared their wages and working hours with that of Honda plant workers near Manesar. They compared their working conditions with that of Maruti’s Gurgaon plant where focus was more on peoplerather that performance. This inequity in wages worked as oil in the fire.

According to me the root cause of this unrest is lack of proper communication, distrust among the workers for the management and too much time taken to address the problem.
Union leadership is a part of the social context to which people belong, or in which they work and they play a very important role in a company. The role of Union leader includes negotiations, bargaining, policing the union, handling grievance process work and of course managing the internal life of the union.
In short, the local Union president works to make the union an active and beneficial presence in each member’s mind and so it's very important that who is the person and is he/she the right person to be there.
Some companies prefer an external Union leader, who is a third party person, totally unbiased. The advantage being that he/she will take an unbiased and balanced decision which will be beneficial both for the companies and the employees but on the other hand the person being the outsider may not know about the real issues or can't reach to the bottom of the problem. Internal Union leader on the other hand is tend to be biased in his/her decision as they are themselves the employee of the company but the positive thing is that they know their people and their problem. So the actions taken by them may be more effective for the employees than the external union leader.

Earlier during British rule, the workers were tortured and exploited. This gave rise to the need of labour union, to end exploitation of workers at factories and other work places like mines etc. after the end of emergency in India the worker union became active. After the first wave of economic liberalization, the thinking of worker unions started to shift towards adopting a collaborative approach rather than a confrontationist approach. The unions recognized the significance of market forces and started working with the management to increase competitiveness. In 2000, again the young workforce entered the market. They were young, ambitious, and aggressive and lacked maturity. This led to rise of union as they wanted their representatives to talk to management and get them their rights. They wanted short-cut for success.

All these led to high unrest situation at Maruti Manesar plant and led to such voracious act of violence. As said by someone, “there is no good kid or bad kid there is only good parents or bad parents, similarly there is no good union or bad union, there is only good management or bad management”.
Texas Instrument is an anti-union corporation because they believe that they can take care of their workers so they do not need a union for the same. Hence, if the management is determined to take care of their workforce then there is no need for such unions to be formed.

Episode 14 of Upanishad Ganga was based on “Grihast Aashram” i.e Married Life. A new beginning where in starts a journey of selfless friendship, love, acceptance, understanding and sacrifice.  It marks the starting of new Faith in a person other than our parents and siblings with whom we have to spend our whole life.
The story was based on mahakavi Maagh who had a nature of doing charity. He is shown as a person who can never say “no” to the needy and will do anything to help him. He showed the compassion that a true soul should have for human beings and their needs. He never let go the needy bare handed from his door as he believed that “the need of the person who asks is greater, therefore we must share what we have with others.”
As a girl, from this episode, I came to learn that understanding between the family members is must to carry out a successful and contented life. Mahakavi Maagh’s Wife gave an example of an ideal wife who understands the motive behind her husband’s giving & generous nature, though she feels a little irritated because she has to compromise with her desires, yet she supports her husband with great zeal towards his intentions.  Where Mahakavi Maagh set a very high standard t help his fellow beings, his wife set an example of a lady, a wife and above all a mother and served as the best link to complete the circle.
Thus, understanding the motive behind the action is the base of all deeds.

"Guru Govind dou khade kaakey laagoon paye, balihaari guru aapne Govind diyo bataye"- Kabir

A Guru is a symbol of true nkowledge and wisdome

Knowledge is da greatest gift one can have and to use that knowledge at right time for right people is the sign of a true soul.

This story tells us about Acharya Gautam’s unbiased decisions about who should be his deciples and Satyakaam’s endless efforts to be one of Gautam’s Deciples.

Satyakaam, being a Daasi’s Son and his leniage being unknown, was always abandoned by the society and specially by the teachers, but his keenness to gain knowledge always led him to ask more and more questions. This inquisitiveness of a child towards knowledge made Acharya Gautam to accept him as his desciple inspite of some raised eyebrows.

This story tells us that we should always have that inquisitive child alive in ourselves and never leave the hope. Gaining knowledge or degree isn’t the only achievement, the actual achievement is to gain respect for each and everyone in the society despite of his/her social background or the society to which they belong.

The story of Satykaam also tells us that we can do something beyond blaming the 'system'...Our society needs people like Acharya Gautam who took the initiative...Despite all odds..Made satykaam his disciple. Satyakaam Jaabaal inspires us to be the change that we wish to see in the world...Despite all the tremendous pressure a student faces today, he can excel. If there is a will...sooner or later.... There WILL be a way.

Sameeksha Khanna _HRLP038, Self Leadership_ HRLP,

This episode shows the importance of Moksha i.e. Liberation the ultimate freedom.
We all are slaves of our senses but we have to control our senses and not let our senses control us.
This story about the proud businessman Kotikaran states his transformation from a proud and arrogant businessman to a monk, getting rid of all the worldly attractions and finally choosing to know oneself i.e. the true meaning of being “I” which lead him to the right path of liberation.
There is a saying in Urdu that means that when we donate something we shouldn’t make eye contact with the needy person because the moment we make eye contact, pride comes in our mind and the person on the receiving end feels inferior. This changes the entire meaning of selfless giving and ultimately it becomes the deed done to show that one is performing goodwill. Kotikaran used to do goodwill just for this sake only. But ultimately when a monk asked him to give away his pride, this made him think about his very being, his purpose of life and the path he is following. Finally he inspired the thief Satyavadi also to leave the path of wrong deeds and follow him to attain salvation.
In this journey from the world to another world i.e. the world of “I” we have to choose our path carefully and selflessly then only we can meet the real ourselves i.e. the core of our being and perform our duties without ego.

Human body is a treasure of power; we just need to find it. Today’s session with Anil sir was based on this concept that the source of power lies within ourselves we just need to find our ways to reach it…today as the journey to finding myself continues I got to know that we don’t need words to express our feelings, to understand somebody and to communicate with them. We just need to observe with all our senses open to receive the signals sent by them.
Today I got to learn the power of observing, and I realized that I can actually read the eyes and gestures of anybody if I listen to them in complete silence. By complete silence I mean to be calm and composed from inside, no voices in my mind to distract me. This happened when I was asked to observe my friend while she thinks of an incident that impacted her life deeply; I simply observed her eyes as they moved along with her thoughts. I noted my readings and I was surprised to know that what I wrote was actually describing her actual thoughts at that time.
Then she added her gestures to describe her story without uttering a word and I observed her with full concentration (at least this is what I think) and noted down my observations. Finally she used her lip movements too while I kept on noting my readings of her gestures and expressions and finally when we discussed the story I was amazed at the power that I have in me, of observing people correctly up to some extent.
I came to realize that it’s our perception that we have to use words to communicate our feelings but actually we can communicate without using words, just like animals do simply using gestures and body language. I learned that our gestures and body movements gets automatically aligned with our thoughts and ultimately they express our real feelings. We even need not see the person to communicate our thoughts, we can communicate our feelings to our loved ones who are thousands of miles away from us, simply by using our thoughts this is what is called telepathy. I came to know how powerful our thoughts can be and how strongly we can use them to communicate. We just need to align our thoughts with our actual feelings and then listen to others.
Finally as a third learning of the Power of Touch, when I was hugging my friends I felt a sudden rush of energy in me, a sudden enthusiasm accompanied by calmness and a happy feeling. A simple genuine touch can make us feel happy, cared, loved and protected. Each day with Anil sir is like knowing me better and understanding my friends and surroundings even better. I feel good when I see that people around me are happy that I am listening and understanding them. This is the feeling that I want in me to stay forever.

Sameeksha Khanna_HRLP038_Self Leadership_May 2012

Every Journey has a destination but what is most important is the purpose of the journey.
Today’s session with Anil sir on self-leadership made me more inquisitive about myself and the purpose of my journey, in short it gave me a question to think upon “who am I?”
A simple question which I never thought of, or to be true I never bothered myself to give a thought to this question. It’s not merely a question to answer but my entire being somehow depends on this.
In today’s session I got to know the importance of this question, the importance of knowing and understanding myself in order to leverage my strengths and then to use them in improving my surroundings.
I got to know about the 6 layers of life (i.e Senses, Instinct, Compassion, Intellect, Ego and I ) that surrounds us and the journey that I have to cover to reach the life giving source i.e my Soul, that part of my very being that observes and witnesses each and everything I do, controls all my body parts as well as my instincts, intellect and emotions.
This session made me more curious to understand myself more deeply, give my thoughts and actions a more sincere look so that I can understand my purpose of life and align my actions in accordance to it.
Another thing that I came to know is that Ego is the biggest hurdle that keeps me from exploring my options and from using my potential to the fullest. In order to maintain a close and strong connection with myself I need to keep aside my Ego so that I can break the shackles of my past and dive in my present and use my actual potential.

The most important learning of this session was that we can achieve the ultimate satisfaction and eternal happiness by serving others and keeping others happy. I am really looking forward to more of such sessions that can actually help me in finding my way to reach the "I" in me.
