The 13th episode of Upanishad Ganga has many
learnings hidden beneath the surface of the story of Sabhyakaam. First we see the urge in the child to learn,
to get educated, to gain knowledge. Learning is something that each one of us
should keep striving towards. Next, we see the behaviour of Malhar Kaka, who discourages him to get
educated. In spite of this, Sabhyakaam does not give up. In spite of facing
social barriers such as caste discrimination (being the son of a Dasi), he
requests Acharya Gautam to teach him. Perseverance always pays. Acharya Gautam
agrees to teach him only because of his passion to learn and perseverance. He
agrees to impart him the knowledge that he has been asking for since such a
long time, despite the fact that other gurus were against this notion. This
teaches us that knowledge is not bound by caste, religion or creed. It is
everyone’s right to be educated, irrespective of who their mother or father is
or which religion they belong to. It also teaches us the lessons of Equality.
Each person should be treated equally and with respect. Only if you give
respect, will you get it in return. J

Sukriti
