In my opinion, happiness is a state of mind in which you are in harmony with yourself and consequently with the external world. It is similar to peace of mind. Happiness is there in all small things of daily life. We should enjoy each and every moment without worrying about our past and future. We should have clarity of our goals, self-confidence and a sense of bonding with God. With this belief system, if we work dedicatedly towards achieving our goals and enjoy every moment, we would be able to achieve success in most of our endeavours and will also build positive relationships with others. Spending quality time with family, friends and colleagues is a good source of happiness. Bringing a smile on the faces of others also provides a lot of happiness.
Doing anything that gives satisfaction to us and makes us feel good about ourselves provides internal happiness. Enjoying whatever we do and producing positive results provides a lot of satisfaction and happiness. Happiness is linked to our aspirations and desires. Taking care of our parents, contributing to our society, professional success are major sources of happiness but these all are possible only if we are cheerful in life and believe in enjoying every moment. We should be ready to face all challenges that life presents and bounce back strongly from our failures. One should be full of energy and should be strong and resilient in difficult situations. A positive attitude in life and deep self-confidence are essential in order to achieve lasting happiness. Staying happy and cheerful and spreading happiness around creates a positive environment in which one can experience deep feelings of inner joy and happiness.
We can get a lot of happiness from our external surroundings also. The natural beauty, pursuing our hobbies like sports, painting, singing, dancing etc. are great sources of joy and happiness. When we are happy, our mind is relaxed and a positive energy flows through our body. We should always strive to live our life cheerfully and should not keep in mind any regrets from our past. We should cherish every moment in life, thank God for whatever he has provided us and follow our values in order to attain lasting happiness.

Any common man must be fortunate to listen to the speech on ‘Self Leadership’ from Mr Anil Sachdev, the inspired leader. I usually find it tough to get the crux of his speech as it has many deep thoughts in it and powerful as well. I should say I was unable to attend his second session on Self Leadership as I was away to represent SOIL in an event organised by AIMA on that day. I am writing this with whatever little I have heard from my friends.

 The class started with paying our regards for our friends Rahul Thind & Gaurav Arora, who are not with us anymore. Mr Anil helped us to let our emotions out and get relaxed from the sorrows to pay attention to his lecture.

The session was based on Appreciative Enquiry (AI) relatively a new term for most of us before joining this esteemed institute. AI is the buzz word at SOIL these days. The students were paired up with the fellow students and given the first hand experience of AI. I was interested more in knowing the good things that comes in life due to AI. The pair was told to paraphrase their partner’s answers. The answers were documented and categorised in two parts, so as to know the positive attributes of both the individuals and SOIL as an entity. The bigger picture on the purpose of the activities done at SOIL can be understood once t is done and that’s the beauty of it.

In a nutshell AI generates a positive energy in and around the participant and helps them to have positivity in all the deeds and actions. The energy gives happiness and confidence. When AI is applied in the industry it will increase the working potential of the employees and make them work in a synergy. I would like to exercise AI in my team at work to see the improvement in the output.

At the end the class concluded by putting our thoughts together and sharing them with each other, in our auspicious circle, which we believe is a unique and interesting way to share our thoughts and feelings with each other, and where the holding of hands signifies and provides the amount of trust required doing so.

Happiness: 10th September 2012 : SWAPNIL DIWAKAR BLP-2013

Anil Sir’s class started with a very positive note which had a flavor of “Happiness”.

Happiness is something everyone wants to have. You may be successful and have a lot of money, but without happiness it will be meaningless.

That’s why I’m excited with this month’s Sidbari trip were the theme is “Happiness” or we can say “Finding happiness”.
We will discuss this topic all month long and I’m sure we will learn a lot. But, before we move further, it’s a good idea to get deeper understanding of the word happiness itself.
Understanding what happiness is will give us good ground upon which to build our discussions.

Let me start with an official definition. According to  Merriam-Webster’s Online Dictionary, here is the definition of happiness:
§  a state of well-being and contentment
§  a pleasurable or satisfying experience

Happiness can also be defined as:
“State of well-being characterized by emotions ranging from contentment to intense joy”

We must realize that for most of the problems, the solutions are often simple and obvious enough if one understands the problem clearly. Even more surprising is the fact that the solutions mostly lie in the problem itself. It is true in the case of happiness too.

Let us consider the above definition carefully. The main keyword in the definition is "want". The whole trouble starts when we want something. Every moment of our lives we keep on wanting something or the other. If we could make a list of all the things we want in our lives since childhood to death, including trivial as well as very important, all the paper in the world perhaps would not be enough for this purpose. Only a small percentage of all our wishes are fulfilled in spite of all our endeavors  The percentage of wishes, which remain unfulfilled, keeps on growing with time.

As a result, as we grow older, we become more and more unhappy. We grow tired of life. The blessings, which our lives and the whole existence keep showering upon us, gradually lose their charm. The frustration, of failing to fulfill most of our wishes, sets in. We start feeling weighed down. The feeling that the whole life is somehow conspiring to keep us unhappy grows. Life becomes full of miseries. We keep stumbling from one failure to another.

If one does not desire anything, he has no chance of getting unhappy due to failure in fulfilling his desire.
One may argue that a life of no desires will be bereft of pleasures. That it will become colorless and dull. But this premise is not true.

As explained by Anil Sir:
HappinessPositive Psychology

  • 1        Unstated emotional expectation of those who I care about
  •                  Untold or unsaid expectation towards friend/relations/wife/parents
  • 2        Regret about the past
  •                   I did not honor what I should have done before at that point of time.
  • 3         Guilt that I carry with me.
  •                   No matter how many years have passed I carry guilt in me, not only regret, its tremendous
  •                   guilt which I carry
Firstly, we must realize that the world does not and cannot function as per our whims and fancies. We are too insignificant in the scheme of the existence. We can have control only over our desires and not on the factors necessary to fulfill them. During winter, we may desire that the sun shines a bit more in the sky but sun has no obligation to behave as per our desires. We may desire that every other human being around us acts in such a way that his acts do not hurt us at all and only make us happy, but the other person has his own desires and compulsions and he will act accordingly. We may desire that whenever we ask for something we get it, but the person or the force that has the power to grant our wishes may not wish to do so or may not be able to do so because of his or its own compulsions.

Are we ourselves always willing or able to fulfill the demands of others around us? If not, then how can we hope that our demands must always be fulfilled? In fact if we pause to consider it carefully then it will become obvious that there always is more probability of our desires not getting fulfilled. Then why keep desiring constantly and exposing ourselves to unhappiness?

Secondly, it is a blunder on our part that we consider happiness and pleasure to be the same. They are not same. Pleasure is there all around us for the taking. Since we have become obsessed with our desires we have ceased to notice sources of pleasure and as a consequence fail to grab it when it is available. Pleasure is the essence which we extract from things we have. We may desire to visit the most beautiful sea beach in the world. When we are finally able to make it to that beach we feel happy. This happiness is the consequence of the fulfillment of our desire. But when we look at the waves rushing towards us, at the golden sand spread over a large area, the wind on our faces, the riot of colors in the sky while sun is setting or rising, the feel of sea water on our skin, what we feel is pleasure. To derive pleasure it is not at all necessary to desire. When we pass along the green fields while travelling, we do feel pleasure looking at them though we had not specifically "desired" to see them. When we look at anything beautiful we feel pleasure.

Pleasure is always around us without our asking for it. It is not a consequence of our ambitions and endeavors, it is simply waiting all around for us to pause and pay attention. It is only that we are always so obsessed with our desires and wishes and the struggle to fulfill them that we have forgotten how to pleasure ourselves. Almost all of the time we live inside our minds, either making plans to fulfill our present desires or ruing the desires which could not be fulfilled and in this process miss out all the pleasures lying all around us.

Thirdly, we do derive pleasure when our desires are fulfilled but for every desire fulfilled there are numerous others that remain unfulfilled. We have to consider carefully whether we are not paying too high a price, in terms of all the frustrations we experience as a result of failures, for a few fulfilled desires. If the answer is yes, then the conclusion is obvious.

Actually, happiness and unhappiness are two sides of the same coin. They are part of the same package. If one asks for one he leaves him susceptible to the other. The desire for happiness is like asking only for the light and not for darkness. But there is not much difference between light and darkness. It is matter of degree only. We choose and therefore get disappointed. What we should do is only look for the pleasures all around us. Whatever comes our way we should try to extract all the pleasure possible from it.

The root cause of all our unhappiness is DESIRE.
If one can STOP desiring, if one can take life as it comes, then only one can be free of unhappiness.

Inspired Leadership: 10th September 2012 : SWAPNIL DIWAKAR BLP-2013

Each session by Anil Sir inspires us a lot ....

The 6 layer model of Self awareness was re-introduced which includes:
  • 1.) Body, Perception -> Diversity
  • 2.) Instinct, Reaction -> Information
  • 3.) Relationship/Emotions, The mind -> Compassion
  • 4.) Intellect, Choices -> Ethics’
  • 5.) Ego-Values/Habit/Fear -> Wisdom
  • 6.) Life giving forces, Truth -> Mindfulness
1st activity of the day was carried out is a group of 5 were suppose to share our thought on the incident occurred in which we lost two of our beloved friends Rahul & Gaurav.
While thinking for while, the 1st think which came into my mind is nothing is permanent in life, even feeling for anyone. We met Rahul and Gaurav about three and a half months back and shared a very close bond of friendship with each of them.
On 3rd September life took a complete different turn and we all found that god loved them more than us. Since last one week we were very disturbed and realised that there are many things in life which is beyond our control. Being human you can show your feeling, react on them and even suffer because of them, but you have no control over them.
The reality of life in death! It’s really difficult to cope up with.
Their memories will always be with us and for us they will always exist. Life moves on and will move with taking them along. We will try to fulfil their dreams and I am sure that they will always be smiling and shower their blessing from heaven.

Nothing is permanent
Few things are beyond our control
Pain of others impacts us
We have to learn to live in the present – Live every date with focus on what is important
Trauma -> Denial -> Anger ->
Emotional drain -> Time healing -> Memories -> Celebrate
The present -> Express love!
Crisis create

Life is brief and tender
Before I die ... campaign, carried out over public place to share their emotions and wish.

Listen -> Present and listen
Put yourself into shoes of speaker, and understand both content (thoughts) and emotional aspect (Feelings)

Sym –pathy  : Along with    <->   Em – pathy  : Into
Once you have listen, understood, and then empathic towards someone.
All in one is called as TRUST
Trust is build over Respect -> Accepting uniqueness
Best way to communicate is eyes, show generosity

Self-understanding
·         Inspired -> Best work
·         Despair -> do not live by potential

Appreciative Inquiry (AI):  We were asked some very simple questions, the impact of the answers of which was to be found out later.
  • ·         When were you at your best in SOIL?
  • ·         What happened, who all were involved?
  • ·         What was special about the experience?
The whole class was divided into pairs and each one in a pair was given a specific time to tell the answer to his/her partner. Once it was done, the pairs were told to paraphrase their counterparts’ answers and that’s where the impact of the activity started to show. The answers were documented & categorized in two parts so as to know the positive attributes of both the individuals and SOIL as an entity. The bigger picture or the purpose of the task could have been easily understood, once it was done and that is the beauty of the Appreciative Inquiry.

Happiness: Positive Psychology
1.    Unstated emotional expectation of those who I care about
Untold or unsaid expectation towards friend/relations/wife/parents

Shubhra_Agarwal_HRLP020_Appreciative_Inquiry_Sep2012

Today I had I session with Snehal ma’am on Appreciative inquiry, this session was very different from any of my session I have attended so far. Usually every session talks about analyzing problems critically  in order to find the solutions. Today’s session teach me to appreciate things in order to find  solutions. By appreciating things in our life , we embrace  the goodness around us but  by critically analyzing them we make our life a  problem statement. Appreciative inquiry means focusing on the good side of a person while ignoring the negatives in him. Appreciative enquiry helps a person in evolving into a better human being. Appreciation creates positive energy which in turn construct an encouraging environment to work while a criticizing  approach creates negative energy and give birth to a discouraging environment. The best implication of this was understood by me with the ’Yes Game’ that we played in the class. In this game we were asked to say yes if a person is taking a right step towards the target but were asked to keep quiet when the person is deviating from the target, With these simple rules of the game we were only appreciating right things  and ignoring bad things. The result of this game was witnessed by me with the happiness and  goodness that got created in the class. The day ended with ‘Lord Ganesha Aarti’. The true symbol for appreciated inquiry. According to Indian mythology  once all  Gods competed among themselves to decide for the best god. The contest says the God who will finish the travel around the earth first will be considered the best. Lord Ganesh whose vehicle was rat, it was impossible for him to travel  on it, Lord Ganesha didn’t criticize anyone and but he made a use of appreciated inquiry, an arrive at solution of taking a travel around his parents.
Now I understand, life is not to crib about what we don’t have but to make the best use of what we have.

Aman Kharbas_BLP001_Self Leadership_September 2012

Today we had our second inning of “Self- Leadership Program”, which is taken by Mr. Anil Sachdev and the experience just keeps getting better and better.
The class got started by paying our regards to our two dear friends who are not anymore with us, and Mr. Anil tried to mould the class participation in such a way that we can remember our experiences in troubled times and share those experiences so that we can get a closure to the inner pain that we all tried to shun in a corner of our mind, and when we were able to remember those troubled times and let the emotions out, most of us certainly felt somehow relieved from the burden of sorrow we were carrying with us for quite a few days. Tears could be seen in the class, as everybody tried to remember the two friends, may God rest their souls in peace.
After that, the discussion went on to the Appreciative Inquiry (AI), which was an alien term for most of us, before coming to SOIL. We were asked some very simple questions, the impact of the answers of which was to be found out later.
  • When were you at your best during your SOIL tenure?
  • When was SOIL at its best during this period?
The whole class was divided into pairs and each one in a pair was given a specific time to tell the answer to his/her partner. Once it was done, the pairs were told to paraphrase their counterparts’ answers and that’s where the impact of the activity started to show. The answers were documented & categorized in two parts so as to know the positive attributes of both the individuals and SOIL as an entity. The bigger picture or the purpose of the task could have been easily understood, once it was done and that is the beauty of the Appreciative Inquiry.
What I understood was that it is very easy to criticize somebody and it’s very easy to feel blue if one is being criticized, but it is a different ballgame when we are trying to ask questions in a context, such that the best of the interviewee can come out. But if the process is correct, it gives the environment a positive energy, which extends to the whole group and makes everyone feel happy, content and most of all confident. The inclination towards positivity can be argued by critics by saying that this hampers our thinking towards problem solving by ignoring the problems, but I learned that this is not true; AI is all about flow of a positive energy in the working teams so that the power to fight the problems can be generated comprehensively and collectively. That way the stress upon the Appreciative inquiry should be given in modern day industries, so as to maximize the working potential of the workforce and make them work in a synergy.

At the end of the class we concluded by putting our thoughts together and sharing them with each other, in our auspicious circle, which we believe is a unique and interesting way to share our thoughts and feelings with each other, and where the holding of hands signifies and provides the amount of trust required doing so.

Ritika Malik_ HRLP 037_ Upanishad Ganga

The episode was all about the concept of giving. We all are involved in giving something or the other to people around us. But one must not expect anything in return. This is what is shown in the episode. Swamiji's true richness lies in the concept of giving. He is respected for that. The women in the episode transformed her life completely for giving others and not expecting anythiing in return.
Therefore, I feel that giving is what makes us feel satisfied. It is by giviing that we can get all the respect, love and relationships in life.

This episode was all about "Giving". We all are involved in the act of giving in one way or the other. Bu the beauty lies in the fact that you give without expecting anything in return.

Swamiji was humanity personified. This trait of his along with popularity as a poet got him immense respect and love. He is strong believer that true richness lies in giving. "Sevak" was one of his most devoted follower and was totally sunk in following the path Swamiji had set. It is the all about leading by example which made a materialistic women transform her mundane life to a meaningful life which evolved around people and not things.

After the episode, my belief that the real bank balance is the amount of love, respect and trust one has is even stronger now. This reminds me of several instances where the salary slip failed to bring in the smile but a small act of giving made my day.

The power of five senses

The power of five senses:

In school we are taught the basics of five senses on very superficial level but deeper understanding was bought in existence in the Self leadership class. All the five organs conveys a deeper meaning and expresses out that is unheard.

Eyes are the path that directly leads to our heart. At times we don’t understand how to communicate our feelings & emotions but eyes helps us to communicate it exactly the way we want other person to understand it was very clear from the exercise that we did in class which proved that eye are the powerful medium to express your feelings.

The second exercise that we did made clear how power of touch can express and communicate the thoughts that are untold. It’s just the touch of person can make you realize whether he is your well-wisher or not.

Next we realised how hugging each other can bring happiness & smiles on everybody’s face though it took me time to come out of my mind set but I felt relaxed and tension relieved after the exercise. It made me realize that worldly pleasures cannot bring the inner happiness that these small things can bring in your life
