Silshi Oberoi_BLP062_Self Leadership_September 2012

Whole class was filled with deep remorse due to an unfortunate tragedy which happened just a week before the leadership session conducted by Mr. Anil Sachdeva.

Standing united as a close knit family in this tough situation only gave us courage to come back to normal routine with mixed emotions.

Session started with little light thrown on emotion and why are they considered so vital in life.
Emotion is often associated and considered reciprocally influential with mood, temperament, personality, disposition and motivation. Emotion is the driving force behind motivation, positive or negative.

Among the groups, we tried to recapitulate our view on emotions about recent tragedy & how we managed to accept that cruel truth. All of us narrowed our thinking to single view “life is unpredictable” & we are too small in front of the great power that drives the universe. Hence, we must try to live “life to the fullest” each moment, instead of tormenting about small things in life.

We were given opportunity to see a wonderful video of a woman, who lost her beloved in sudden event, but still learnt to live her life. She writes her wish on the wall as “one thing I wish to do, before I die”, where many people share their wishes and this activity helps them express their inner feelings. This shows that expressing most important work helps in remembering it from time to time & staying focused towards attainment of that wish.
Later on we were explicated the ability of deep listening. We should have the curiosity of a child when we are listening to others. We need to understand properly what the speaker is telling. Also we need to make the speaker feel comfortable and with our body language and gestures we need to make him understand that we are following whatever he is trying to convey. We must also paraphrase whatever he has told over a period of time and repeat it.
We were explained that emotional quotient depend on various factors viz listening, empathy, patience, respect, genuineness & warmth. The session progressed ahead with concept of empathy and sympathy. The sympathy (Sym=with) means understanding the position of other person or being along with other person. While empathy (Em=into) means accepting the uniqueness of the other person by wearing his shoes.
Then we underwent the Appreciative Inquiry process where in each student was paired with another student and we did put the questionnaire such as when was one at his/her best, what happened during the process, who were involved in the process, what was the ambience around and how was the experience. Surprisingly we came to know a lot many hidden qualities of our fellow mates which we never knew before and in a way understood each other in a much better way.

The session ends with a beautiful video on Mathieu Ricard, the happiest man in the world sharing his views on happiness.
