Courage is a feeling or I would rather say a stimulus of mind, which is a synthesized when human beings are under great pressure, or we are subjected to some form of brutality, or something or someone that is very near and dear to you is threatened or challenged or abused. Physical strength and ability do not represent courage; they don’t even have a correlation with courage. There are various things that can be mentioned here, which were summarized by my classmates in different definitions:

  • Identification with the community
  •  It comes from inside- the cause for which you are fighting
  •  It comes from passion towards a goal
  • It comes from selflessness- when you serve a higher cause
  •  You discover aspects in yourself which even you were not aware
  • It’s a “spark” from within
  • “Ethics”- being true to yourself brings courage
  • Opportunity to take on big responsibility

But the best definition that came out was from one student.
"Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgment that something else is more important than fear."   --   Ambrose Redmoon

I found it extremely important to exorcise the demons inside you, so that we can be courageous at the hour of need. A heroic deed is not the one when you fought someone; it’s when you fought these demons.

Happiness is a state of mind or some chemical composition happening inside brain, that is a topic of debate, but one thing is for sure, that Happiness is something very intrinsic. As explained by Mr. Mateiu Ricard, all of our lives, most of us make lists in our minds consciously or semiconsciously, of the things which we think will bring happiness to us and throughout the life, we try to collect those items, and in the end if we are successful in that, still there is no happiness around. That proves that happiness is completely intrinsic. The guy who missed the lottery with one digit can be as happy as the guy who won it. An interesting experiment was done where a person working for an NGO and a normal person were subjected to brain scan and the left side of the brain was stimulated more in a the person working for an NGO, where he developed compassion towards needy human beings. This experiment proved that compassion is directly related to happiness, if only we could develop compassion towards a cause and helping others, happiness can be achieved, hence the proverb “Happiness is all about giving”.
