Self Leadership October 2012_BLP_Anuj Budhiraja (16th Oct & 23rd Oct)

Today we had learnt about the most important question of our life i.e. which field are we interested into or in which field we want to make our career. So there are some framework which will take us further to the desired goal.
There are 6 factors in decision making:
1)    What is the most important question and what is the framework of achieving that objective?
2)    Collect meaningful and reliable information
3)    Creative and doable alternatives
4)    Logic for evaluation
5)    Values + tradeoffs
6)    Implementation
So after that I decided to stick to one field where I am comfortable in and design the path for it. After that Sir had talked about innovation and creativity, so we know that after the age of 15-18 years child start getting less creative vs. a child who is 3-8 years old. So he shared the same story with us and made us do funny things in class where we become child. He shared a real life story and basically that was an experiment done on small students. In the experiment there were two classes of same standard, they told teachers in front of students that one of the class is very weak and they can't do anything in life. In addition, on the contrary side he told the other class that these students are brilliant and they have a great future ahead. Afterwards they kept on track the students on performance basis and after 20 years, they came to know that the students of brilliant class excelling in life very fast and on the other hand weak class students are doing nothing and living a miserable life. This brutal experiment had been criticized a lot as it had murdered the adolescence of the students just for the sake of the experiment.

After that we had a small creativity class where in we need to advise him uses of pen as many as we can think off in a minute (60 seconds). Like this we had some more activity where in we used our creativity to best of our use , so after this I realised we have so much potential and we are restricted to use our thought process well as we had forgotten about it because we are not used to it. We should not have any fear in our life which can become potential obstacle in our learning or experience. So for this we had we had some questions and on a range of 1-10 we need to answer the same:

·         Whenever I try to do something new , fear of failure strikes in between
·         To what extent I am conscious about others
·         To what extent I am concerned about the ambiguity
·         To what extent you are concerned about time and lack of resources.
·         Are you scared of natural resources like water, Fire, etc?
So I felt like I am scared of water so I should stop thinking in that fashion and tackle my fear as it is causing hindrance in my life. I need to take some corrective action for the same so that my fear does not cost my creativity/learning.  We need to introspect a lot as if we need to attain our goals we should know the inspiring force behind that. On that note there was an exercise where in pairs we need to talk about who inspired you the most in your life, what are the most inspiring books and movies you have seen , Values that are very close to your heart. So we have to make our own mission statement that will measure where are we and what we want to achieve in life.

The last session was all about the Ladder of Inference describes one of our basic habits of mind. There are seven questions in the ladder which will help each of us to move forward in life.
1.    I take my action based on “my beliefs”
2.    I adopt beliefs about the world
3.    I draw conclusions –make judgements
4.    Assumptions based on the meaning added
5.    Constructed meanings (Cultural and personal)
6.    Selected “Data” from Observations
7.    Observable “Data” and experiences (as a video recorder might capture it)
By this exercise we understand that we should know what actions should be taken for our own good. When we see something we make an association with that thing we make perception. In addition, our mind starts working that our beliefs are the truth, the truth is obvious, and our beliefs are based on real data.

The last day of Self Leadership started with the theme of courage where in everybody discussed on table what is courage meant for them. So there were observations:
·         Courage comes from selflessness, identification with the community
·         It comes from inside- the cause for which we are fighting
·         Extraordinary challenge- overcomes limitations
·         “SPARK FROM WITHIN”
Anil Sir shared few examples of courage and one of them was of a person who stood against the govt system. So we should also have courage to change the system wherein required. After that we have a video of world’s happiest person Mathieu Ricard. So we are made to understand the difference between pleasure and happiness from this video. We are running around the materialistic things which was the major difference but happiness is inside us , we should be happy irrespective of enough money earned and should not always run behind it. We should live in present moment and cherish that .There is a phase in happiness where we tend to go from love to hate but opposite journey is very difficult for being happy.

Last but not the least he told us an effective way to overcome our fears by the help of an introspective tool called Immunity X-Ray. In this we should self introspect one difficult thing which we would like to change and consistently help in making that change happen.
In the End, we showed our appreciation to Mr. Anil Sachdev for enriching us with the holistic picture & concept of “The Ladder of inference”, “Creativity & Innovation”, “Courage and Happiness” which should completely changed our way of thinking.
