Self leadership- Part -2- Emotional Intelligence

My key learning from the Self Leadership Class on 5 Oct 2012-

In the first part of Self Leadership, we learnt that it is very important for to be a good leader, one should be able to lead their body, with their 5 senses.

The second part of Self Leadership deals with Emotional Intelligence. Emotional intelligence is acquired. It is largely based on upbringing and early education. It is as a result of nurturing and not nature. The best part of EI is that it can be improved at each level. It has also been proven that EI is 100 times more important than Intellectual Intelligence.

An important aspect of EI is deep listening. There was a very interesting exercise that was done in class that tested our listening skills and ego. At the end of the exercise, we realized that apart from listening skills, our patience was also put to test. We also learnt the importance of the art of summarizing a big dialogue. We also learnt that understanding occurs due to conscious listening and that you can become a fantastic problem solver if you listen carefully.

There was a second exercise done in the next session, where we had to talk about someone who had been very close and had inspired us. It was a very well structured group which had a facilitator, time keeper, team leader, observer and spokesperson. The discussion went on very well as they were people who were there to keep the discussion in control. At the end of this exercise, I realized what it took for each person to consider someone as his/her as a role model.

The next session, we had another exercise that asked us to describe the most joyful moment after joining SOIL.  We worked in teams of two and each of us had beautiful experiences to share. We were also taught the difference between “Pleasure with excitement” and “Pleasure with joy”. The former causes addiction and the latter does not.

We finally had a session where I would probably say had increased the bonding between HRLP and the MLP batch. Each of us shared a very tragic experience that happened in our lives and got to know that each others’ problems were probably bigger than ours. Most of us broke down while narrating those incidents and each of consoled each other and this increases the bonding between both the cohorts.

I am extremely happy that this session happened and brought both the cohorts together. Overall, the day was an enjoyable one with a huge amount of learning too. I am grateful to Anil Sir, who took his time off to teach us.
