Sandeep Ramadev_BLP0040_Self Leadership_May 2012

As they say, the sea is calm before the storm, I was expecting something in the same terms after the fun frolic week before today. If Last week was filled with exuberance, the academic session starting with a topic “Self Leadership” was quite bewildering. I was under the influence why do you need a Full day session, on Leadership, which everybody is aware of. But the session was taken by Anil Sir, so there must something in it. Let’s see.

I entered the classroom with a cynical thought but what followed was one of the most beautiful sessions I had ever attended. The simple thought of, If one has to be a leader, one has to know about oneself first was really refreshing. Without knowing oneself, it would be difficult to define a path for others to follow. The first activity was about knowing things about oneself to Lead. When Anil Sir told that this session was usually given to CEO’s or VP’s to various organizations, it  showed his confidence on us as future leaders.

The six layers of Self was a real eye opener. The concept of Body, Mind and Soul imbibed in them truly opened me up. I have written my understanding of layers as below, which are also the pillars of SOIL

Body (Diversity) – It is basically the Data given to us using simulation of 5 senses. Soul is the owner of the Body.
Instinct – We are the owners of the instinct and not instinct itself. Deriving information from the data might itself not be correct. Hence we should not react based on instinct.
Relationship/Emotion (Compassion) – I am not the mind as I am only the observer. We own the mind.
Intellect/Knowledge (Ethics) – We are the owner of choices and not the choices itself.
Ego- Values /Habits/Fears (Sustainability) – One should watch our ego, work for long term goals and should convert our knowledge to wisdom.
Life Giving Forces – Truth (Mindfulness) – Be true to yourself. Give your best and leave the rest to take its own course.

When I was already astounded  with the concept of Self , Anil Sir stressed on the fact it is not only about Self realization but also other communication factors that are necessary for a person to complete as a Leader.

I never had a clue about eyes being a powerful mode of communication.90% of effective communication is attained through eye contact. Observing through eye is really vital and creates an unspoken bond among people. Same holds good for listening as well. When people listen, an emotional bond is attained. The mood of the speaker is controlled by the audience. The audience controls and decides the flow of speech. The fact that 6 layers of Self were aligned to it, which provided a charisma. When audience believe a High integrity is attained they will start listening. Great Listeners have always been great leaders and to listen with compassion with no expectations was my great findings in todays session. The Final communication is the power of Touch. Touch transforms the positive energy among individuals and creates a sense of oneness. It also expresses a form of Empathy.

The activities conducted to understand each form of Communication was simply mind blowing. The concepts which would have filled hundreds of pages and significant amount of time to read was explained with ease by Anil Sir .The zeal with which my friends participated the activities and their different views expressed to questions thrown by Anil Sir, showed the diversity of thoughts on which the SOIL really thrived. The day ended on a high note with Anil Sir answering frankly to my question his personal and professional Success.

So with the cynical thought, with which I entered the room completely vanished, the inquisitiveness in me to learn more has aroused now. Waiting for next Monday to arrive to continue on my path of enlightenment on what it takes to become a Good Leader.
