Sahil Seth_BLP046_Self Leadership_May 2012

In this era of modern world we move so fast to catch up with the pace that we almost ignore to realize the basic and much needed fact. We are in a hurry to simply run after the success mantras and somehow attaining the desired position without actually thinking of the appropriate method. To be honest, this is the way how our thinking process has become these days. We see, perceive and start following what we feel is good for us. In this whole process we forget the most important aspect of life and that is “I”. We never ask a simple question – “Who am I?”
Today I learnt a basic but very effect concept about Self – Leadership. And it could be expressed in a simple line:-
“You cannot lead anyone, unless you lead yourself”.
To lead yourself it is important to understand and know your own self. There is a model "Six Layers of Self" which says that first and foremost it is our body that responds to all forms of data around us. To this data our body reacts and leads us to a particular direction through our instincts. Then our emotional mind builds relationship around this periphery through certain emotions. To explain in one line – “At Data level we become aware and at emotional level, we care.” The next layer has to be the choices we make with these relations as per our intellect. And how we handle our ego, values ,habits and fears pertaining to these scenerios. In the end we are left with Life giving force and that is the Truth. So in short to summarize the flowchart goes as Diversity -> Compassion –> Ethics –> Sustainability -> Mindfulness. If we actually understand these 5 pillars of Soil and connect ourselves to these, we can understand our selves.
But just by knowing oneself does not serve the complete purpose. Now that we know about who we are and what are our strengths ,we ought to practice the three magnificent powers that each human being possesses to actually become a successful leader. First and foremost It is the Power of Observation through which we explain the context and convey our feelings through eyes. It seemed to me the most fascinating power as I feel that “Eyes are the windows to Soul” and we can judge a person`s personality, honesty, sincerity just by looking into his/her eyes. Eyes give way to hundreds of expressions which even our words cannot signify.
The next power is the direct implantation of how good a leader could be if he has this particular power in him. Peter Drucker says that “You cannot become a good leader if you are not a good listener.” To understand people and to value them, it is important that you cultivate the habit of being a good listener. Once you become a good listener, you are likely to become a person of integrity and people only listen to those who are with high integrity. This even helps us to connect to one another and give respect to everyone`s feelings.
And last but not the least is the Power which can create vibes of energy and is certainly the most influential power amongst all. It is the Power of Touch. A touch is a powerful source to transfer energy and make someone feel special. We built our trust through our touch. All we need is the pure intention.
So these are the three powers which inspires and motivates one to achieve something which seems to be unachievable because a famous person has said “When you are inspired by a higher Purpose, strange things happen to you" . Its in our hands what we can make out of us. If we have the direction we will find our destiny.
